Julie Broderick

Julie Broderick teaches 5th grade at the School at Columbia University, working with students to investigate mathematics, literacy, and social studies. In addition to her classroom work with children, she is also deeply committed to working with teachers. For two years, she coordinated Teach21, the professional development initiative that is part of the School at Columbia. During her leadership, Teach21 offered workshops and summer institutes for educators in New York, San Francisco, and Istanbul. Julie is an adjunct professor at Bank Street College of Education, teaching math education workshops and leading educator study tours to Cuba. She has also taught undergraduate elementary methods courses at Barnard College. Prior to teaching at The School at Columbia, Julie taught for eleven years in the New York City public schools, working in Spanish bilingual, dual-language, and monolingual classrooms. These schools included the Manhattan School for Children on the Upper West Side and the Amistad School and P. S. 128 in Washington Heights. Julie is a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and was honored for this award by President Obama at the White House. Julie has traveled and consulted on elementary mathematics education throughout the United States, as well as in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, England, Ireland, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Turkey.
