  • Developing Strong Number Sense with Students in the Elementary Math Classroom Through the Practice of Number Strings (Full Day - June 17)

Strong mathematics students are creative problem solvers, critical analyzers of data, and great communicators of their thinking, both orally and in writing. They also are computationally fluent and possess strong number sense. What does this mean to have a strong sense of number? How do elementary students develop this strong number sense over the course of their time in school, beginning in kindergarten and continuing into middle school? What is the role that number strings serve in a classroom focused on developing computational fluency and number sense? Participants will watch classroom video and look at student work as a way of bringing the students into the workshop session. If you are a teacher, math coach, administrator, or parent interested in learning more about this key element of the mathematics classroom, please join us for a day of investigation and discussion.

  • An Essential Toolbox for Elementary Math Teachers (3rd - 5th Grades): Innovating Your Practice (Full Day - June 18)

What are the essential elements of the upper elementary math workshop? Why is rich context key to the problem solving work we do with our students? How can number work be integrated into the workshop routine? What role do games play in the math classroom? All of these topics will be discussed during our session together. Participants will have the chance to engage in doing some math and reflecting on that experience, from the learner's perspective. We will discuss the importance of contextual problems and the best ways to develop these contexts. We will look at math homework across the upper elementary grades, collaborating to design a number of meaningful assignments. The final sessions of the day will center around unit planning in the math classroom and communicating with families. How do you look at the math unit and plan for all the many parts? How can we best communicate with our students' families about our inquiry-based math classrooms that place a strong emphasis on number sense? This will be a day full of discussion, inquiry, and problem-solving. We welcome teachers who are in the early years of developing their math teaching practice, as well as those who are very experienced but want to reinvigorate their practice and learn from thoughtful colleagues. Come spend a day engaging in the rich work of mathematicians, so we can inspire our students to do the same.
